The classic Black film “The Best Man” is getting a sequel 14 years later the original hit the box office.
A reboot of the 1999 wedding-themed romantic comedy with its original cast will be released on Nov. 15, 2013 via Universal Pictures.
In 2011, the film’s writer and director Malcolm D. Lee met with cast members Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, Harold Perrineau, Melissa DeSousa, Regina Hall, Nia Long, and Terrence Howard in Los Angeles about the possibility of doing an update on the original story.
The untitled follow-up will have Lee returning to write and direct again. He will also serve as producer alongside newly added Sean Daniel, whose credits include producing “The Mummy.”
In the original film, Diggs plays a writer named Harper Stewart who is “The Best Man” in the wedding of Lance Sullivan, his football player pal (Chestnut). Throughout the weekend of wedding activities, a book penned by Stewart loosely based on the real life accounts of he and his friends is the hot topic and reveals how he actually slept with Sullivan’s fiancé, Mia Morgan (Calhoun).
All hell breaks loose during Sullivan’s bachelor party upon the realization that his best man and fiancé once slept together and he savagely beats up Stewart.
The film grossed $35 million at the box office after its original release.
No details have been released about the upcoming storyline for the sequel of the film and all of the original actors are expected to return.
